The objective of the Grief Counseling program is to prepare you for a career in the counseling field. Being a good listener is paramount to being a good counseling. You have to listen, empathize, and identify with your patients. Once you have learned this you will be able to address specific problems and help your patients move on and deal with their emotional grieving. With our concentrations, you can further specialize your education and increase your counseling knowledge in an area that best suits your educational needs.

Course Syllabus Overview
This course provides a comprehensive look at world religions and their perspectives on death and dying. Within the course, you will examine both Eastern and Western philosophies on death and the next life. Within the personal aspect of death, the course will delve into various ideals of heaven, hell, judgment, reincarnation, and other methods of salvation as seen through the prism of multiple religious ideals. In addition to personal death, the course also examines the broader elements of eschatology or end times. This course provides for knowledge acquisition regarding death and dying, specifically related to the religious affiliations of clients. Course Syllabus Overview
This course is divided in three parts. Part I explores conceptual issues and their application in alcohol and other drug service delivery system. It chronicles the historical development of early prevention, intervention and treatment efforts. Part II explores the development of a culture-specific and multicultural framework in the alcohol and other drug field. These cultural groups are examined in terms of their history, demographics, and patterns of use and abuse, customs, beliefs, values, attitudes, norms, traditions, and learning and communication styles. The last part concentrates on the effective management strategies in the alcohol and other drug field. It recognizes the diversity in our population and the problems associated with the pluralistic nature of our society.

GRF 490: Grief/Bereavement Capstone Project

Course Syllabus Overview
This course is designed as an Independent Study learning course. When you are at this level in the degree program, you will select one focused area of study within the specialty of grief counseling/bereavement. Your choice of study/topic is mutually agreed upon by you and your instructor. The objective is to acquire a significant amount of learning/knowledge related to a particular area of interest in grief counseling and bereavement education, as well as demonstrate the ability to develop advanced life-long learning skills. This is the last course in the degree program. Students must have completed all other courses in the curriculum before registering for this course.
