GRD 1102 – Psychotherapy Overview: Theory and Practice II
Instructor: Thomas H. Schear, Ph.D.
COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to GRD 1102: Psychotherapy Overview: Theory and
This course is part of the Accelerated Doctoral program in Grief Counseling at Breyer State University. It is a 6-hour semester course that must be completed within 6 weeks. Its aim is to gain a working understanding of fundamental theories of psychotherapy and its practice. GRD 1101 is the first part with GRD 1102 completing the topic. Together the courses provide you with a theoretical understanding of various approaches to therapy
and a practical skill set necessary for the effective practice of grief therapy. While you may have gained some familiarity with this material in Masters level courses, GRD 1101 and 1102 provide more advanced working knowledge of the major approaches to therapy. You will also find consistent opportunities to apply the material to grief therapy specifically.
Please bear in mind that this is an accelerated program, so you will find the course to be fast-paced and the workload a bit more intense than what is typical in a regular program.
TIME FRAME: GRD 1102 is a 6 hour semester course that must be completed within a 6 week period.
You must complete all course requirements successfully within that time period. Week
one will begin when you register for the course or, alternatively, the day you notify me via e-mail that you have received the textbook and are ready to begin. Extensions are granted in certain circumstances. You must obtain written approval from me. You can contact me at email@example.com.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS: After completing the assigned weekly reading your
assignment is to write a 3 to 4 page (double spaced, 12pt. Times Roman font) summary of each chapter. In addition to summarizing the content you should identify what you see
as the strengths and weaknesses of the theories at it can be applied to grief counseling and how you believe you will be able to apply it in your own practice. I will provide feedback and you will move on to the next assignment. Because the length of the summary is rather small given the expectations you will need to get right to the point, be clear, not wasting words.
Remember, do not hesitate to contact me with questions about the course, the material or my feedback at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note that occasionally emailers receive a bounce back due to technical issues that no one seems able or willing to resolve.
