COURSE OVERVIEW: Welcome to Human Resource Management, a Bachelor Level course in the curriculum for the Degree, Bachelor of Science in the study of Human Resource Management. I am pleased to instruct you in this course.

This course examines the impact of relevant labor relations and negotiations issues that explore the changing relationships in the workplace that have taken their toll on the traditional collective bargaining and labor relation’s processes.

TIME FRAME: This is a 4-semester hour course. This course is allotted 15 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 15-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded 4 semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOKS: There is one (1) required textbook for this course.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam. The mid-term exam covers the material in chapters 1 to 6 and must be taken by the end of the 7th week in the course. The final examination covers chapters 7 to 12 and must be taken by the end of the 15th week in the course.

Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The examinations are "open book" objective type. You will have one (1) day to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions are scheduled. Please keep my email address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. COURSE OBJECTIVE: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Comprehend the realistic and actual collective bargaining and labor relation’s process.
  • Understand the changes in the application of labor laws and changes in the environmental and management relations.
  • Understand what labor relation professional encounter and how they handle the collective bargaining process.
  • Enhance the learner’s awareness of International Labor Relations and collective bargaining approaches in the common sense in different ways around the world.
  • Convey the basic ideals of the U.S. Labor movement.
  • Present an overview of the federal and state labor legislation that affect collective bargaining and labor relations
  • Define unions, their organizational structures, their organizing tactics, and management’s response to union organizing campaigns.
  • Analyze the process of contract negotiations.
  • Provide an overview of work stoppage, strike plans, and methods for resolving impasse and labor disputes
  • Provide an overview of the major provision commonly encountered in a collective bargaining agreement (eg., wage scales, overtime and supplementary pay, employee benefit plans, management rights and union security clauses, seniority systems, health and safety provision, and disciplinary procedures).
  • Explain contract administration and describe the use of grievance procedures and binding arbitration to resolve disputes over the interpretation and application of the collective bargaining agreement.
