SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is based on presenting effective methods of Instruction for Secondary schools in the Social Studies. These Systematic Approaches, if learned and taught daily can be an asset to the learner. An can be an enhancement to the learning environment. Research supports that when a teacher is filled with love, compassion and with a touch of care it has a way of strengthening the entire student body. Learners will then begin to work toward accomplishing their individual goals.

In this course you will be given the opportunity to create methods of instruction by designing effective lessons in Social Studies. You will be given the opportunity to Research and Observe teachers and students in a learning environment. You will be given the opportunity to post your personal philosophy of knowledge in the chat room to discuss and evaluate similarities and differences for discussion, which is requirement of every student enrolled in class. This will give you the opportunity to present your personal goals.

You will be given the opportunity to team with a Social Science Teacher in a Secondary School setting as an as a mentor studying various methods of instruction utilized by the teacher and the information in the assigned readers. You will be able to create a journal outlining and note-taking various methods used by regular education teacher in their classroom of choice. You will be able to identify and monitor the responses of the stimuli used to test and examined the effectiveness of the methods of instructions. You will be able to evaluate data collected from the study and present new methods of instructions that are not presented in the text however there is evidence that would support the effectiveness of the methods of instructions used daily in a local district classroom. Effectiveness can be defined as the ability to improve and produce success. Effectiveness assures that the learner is receiving the instructions being delivered daily and learner being able to retain the information the learner has shown to meet mastery of content and excel beyond teacher expectations.

This course will explore to find new Methods of Instruction in the Social Sciences of Secondary Schools. This course will also engage audiences in analyzing 21st century issues and trends effecting student growth. This course gives students the opportunity to conduct research by studying connections, and interlocks between historical, philosophical, sociological, and psychological data that will assist in creating and implementing effective methods of instruction in the classrooms. Which will be an asset to the teachers, teaching middle school learners who are continuously struggling in the Social Studies area. This course will review over the role of a teacher, and defined responsibilities and expectation of the learning community. Current issues will be identified through discussion and related experiences in the classroom.

TIME FRAME: This is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted 10 weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the 10-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day which you notify me that your textbooks have arrived and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five semester hours of credit.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course, a mid-term exam and a final exam.

Questions for the Midterm will be derived from the First through the Fifth Week of Chapter Goals of daily Reading Assignments)

Additional Assignments posted to Classrooms will be Weekly Challengers for extra credit and any pop quizzes.

Final Exam (Will be developed from the notes and chapter goals from the Sixth through the Tenth Week.)

Both exams are programmed and are located in the classroom for this course. The examinations are "open book" objective type. You will have one (1) day to complete your exam, once you access it from the classroom. To access the exam, you must send me an email and request to have access to the exam. Upon registration, you will receive your email address. I will then program your access in. You will receive an email back from me telling you that you are now authorized to go ahead and to access your exam. To access, you will come into the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and PASS WORD to access the exam. The exam will appear on your screen. Once you access the exam, you have 24 hours to submit your answers. The program provides me the exact date and time that you accessed the exam. The program also notifies me of the exact date and time that you submitted your answers. Thus, the program is timing you. When you are ready, go back into the classroom and click in your responses and then click submit. Shortly, you will receive the exam in your email box with your computed score. You will also know what questions, if any, that you missed, and what the correct answer is. I also receive a copy of your exam and your score.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100%    = A
80-89%      = B
70-79%      = C
Below 70% = Fail

COMMUNICATION: You are encouraged to communicate with me. I am available as a teacher, coach, and mentor to assist you in meeting your goals for this course. Primarily, communication is through email. However, I am also available for conversation by telephone if you would like. Our classroom for this course has a "chat" room. I am also very willing to meet with you one-on-one in the chat room at your request. From time to time, depending on how many students are enrolled in this course at a particular time, we will have some scheduled group chats. You will receive more detailed information at the time such chat sessions are scheduled. Please keep my email address handy so that you can contact me whenever necessary. If at any time during this course you change your email address, please be sure to notify me right away.
