SYLLABUS

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course introduces you to the study of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, which is essential to healthcare reimbursement. The course is designed to provide you with the basic medical coding skills. The focus of the class is on Anesthesia coding.

TIME FRAME: This is a five-semester hour course. This course is allotted ten weeks of time. You must complete all of the requirements for the course successfully by the end of the ten-week period. The first day of week one will begin the day that you register for the course, or the day, which you notify me that your textbook has arrived, and you are ready to begin your studies. Please be cognizant of the time frame. It is rare that extensions of time are permitted, unless you have good justification. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded five-semester hours of credit.

TEXTBOOKS: The following books are required for this course.

Book 1: CPT & HCPCS Coding Made Easy 6th. Davis, James, Practice Management Information Corporation. 06: ISBN # 1570660840.

Book 2: ICD-9-CM (You can use any Version)

Book 3: (OPTIONAL) 2005 Coding Workbook for the Physician's Office 13th Covell, Alice. Thomson Learning. ISBN # 1435484096.

Book 4: (OPTIONAL) CPT Manual. Please use current edition. You should have by now if you are attempting to take this course. You will need it.

EXAMS: You will complete each workbook exercise and view lecture notes before taking the designated Midterm or Final Examination.

  • Midterm Exam will be completed online.
  • Final Examination will be completed online.
  • Each test has a set time 48-hour time before it is due.
  • Once a test is opened, it must be completed or the grade will be forfeited. If the student opens the wrong test, the student must contact the instructor at that time. It is up to students to be sure they are ready to take a test before entering it.
  • Both tests will have sections that require the use of the CPT or ICD-9 coding book. For all questions that do not need a "code," the student is not to use the CPT or ICD-9 book.

GRADING: The grading scale for this course is as follows:

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
Below 70% = Fail

Points:

Journaling Project - 10 pts
Exam (2) - 80 pts (40 pts each)

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Describe the use of codes, modifiers, and symbols found in the coding book.
  • Understand the differences among the sections of the CPT / HCPCS/ ICD-9 manual as well as how the sections are related.
  • Follow the guidelines found in each chapter, and apply the rules of correct coding.
  • Understand the different types of health care coding and be aware of the procedures associated with the coding for medical claims.
  • Learn how the ICD-9-CM diagnostic coding system works.
  • Learn how the CPT-4 procedural coding system works.
  • Learn the true basics of how HCPCS coding system concepts.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use correct medical insurance terminology, abbreviations, and understanding of the various medical insurance programs available to consumers.
  • Relate the importance of diagnostic and procedural coding to physician anesthesia reimbursement.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • List the additions, deletions, revisions and coding rule changes of the 2006 anesthesia code set
  • Recognize the proper documentation elements of the new 2006 anesthesia codes
  • Explain the logic, rationale and proposed function of the 2006 anesthesia code set changes
  • Bridge understanding between clinical decisions made by the CPT Editorial Panel regarding appropriate anesthesia service and procedure descriptions with functional interpretations of coding guidelines and code combinations necessary for users of the 2006 CPT anesthesia code set.
